Our Story

White Gradient

"Until he extends the circle of compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace."

Albert Schweitzer

How It Began

Lakshmi Cow Sanctuary got its start when a retired college professor, Dr. Sankar Sastri, bought a 42 acre farm in Bangor, PA for protecting cows from slaughter and abuse. The sanctuary has now moved to a larger 90-acre property in Stroudsburg, PA. We currently have 21 cows and bulls, 4 cats, chickens and a beloved pig living with us!

Our Mission

Our mission here at Lakshmi Cow Sanctuary is to provide not only a safe haven for cows who would otherwise have been destined for the slaughterhouse, but also to provide them with a free and loving environment where they can live peacefully. It is our goal to protect as many cows as possible and to make them genuinely happy.

Our Philosophy

  • A Cow is like a mother to us

  • Cows give abundant milk not only for their calves but also for us

  • There are 90,000 cows and calves slaughtered each day in the US

  • Cow protection brings happiness and perfection in life

  • Cow ghee is a necessary ingredient for performing a Yagna

  • Cows are dear to Lord Krishna

  • The mere sight of a cow is considered a good deed

  • A cow is an invaluable asset in human society

  • Cows are intelligent, sentient beings who want to live just as much as we do
